When exactly is Google's birthday? Search engine celebrates 18th birthday with a doodle - but there's something wrong

Yahoo put out a special doodle today to symbol is 18th birthday.

The animated Google doodle, designed by Gerben Steenks, represents the letter "G" as a balloon modeller, putting on a party hat and surrounded by confetti and streamers.

The G produces up a long go up and twists it into the letters "oogle", to complete the name of the internet search engine, before the balloon floats away and pulls the G with it.

The doodle is being displayed on Google's homepage around the world on September 27.

There is just one single problem.

While Yahoohas celebrated its birthday on September 27 for the past ten years, that hasn't always been the truth.

In 2005 Google released a birthday doodle on September 26, in 2005 it was put up on September 7, and in 2003 it was put it on eight September.

Relating to Google's own company history, Google. com was registered as a domain name on 15 September 97, and the company submitted for incorporation on 4 September 1998.

The reason for the choice of September 27 remains uncertain - however some have recommended a dispute with competitor search engine Yahoo in 2005 as the source.

Allegedly, in 2005, Yahoo declared an index that was larger than Google's, producing in a heated argument between the two companies.

Google used the justification of its "birthday" on September 26 to publicize a new, expanded index, making Google "more than three times larger than any other search engine".

Others have advised that Google has chosen September 27 because it was your date of Google's first birthday design in 2002.

Either way, Google makes no apology for the fluidity of its birthday.

"Google exposed its doors in The month of september 1998, " the company said back 2006.

"The exact date when we celebrate our birthday has moved around through the years, depending on when people feel as if having cake. "
